Foolscap or A4 – What’s the difference?

  • Foolscap:

Foolscap or folio is a traditional paper size used in Europe and the British commonwealth, before the adoption of the standard A4 paper.

Foolscap is slightly larger and measures 8.5 inches by 13.5, which makes a practical folder or clip board, allowing extra room for an A4 piece of paper to fit in, and this prevents the corners from folding or important essays or documents from becoming squashed. The foolscap size is also used for trays, again ensuring there is enough room so the A4 paper doesn’t get worn and torn.

  • A4:

A4: is 8.27 × 11.69 inches which is half the size of A3 and that is half the size of A2 and so on up to A0, the largest piece of paper. A4 was set up in 1975 and originates from Germany. A4 is the perfect size and the most common size for writing and recording information on.

The A4 paper is slightly smaller than the foolscap and therefore slots inside Foolscap folders or trays.
